07 Nov 12 | Friendly Versus Australia Starts
Hot on the heels of new matches against Denmark and Peru, George Pyrich has finalised arrangements with his counterpart Brian Jones, and we start a new friendly international versus Australia formally on 1st December, though play is possible now. The match is on webserver, over 20 boards. We've played the Aussies three times in recent years. They won a 6-board email encounter played 1999-2001 by 8-4. Unusually, Scotland won a 21-board webserver/postal match running from 2005-08 by 24-18. Most recently, the 25-board webserver/postal contest across 2009-11 resulted in success for the Wallabies by 34½-12½ (two points were voided). Good to be back in action once more, and best wishes to everybody taking part!

30 Oct 12 | Friendlies Versus Denmark and Peru Start
George Pyrich has completed arrangements with his counterparts Kristian Jensen (Denmark) and Gino Figlio (Peru), and we start two new friendly internationals formally on 31st October, though play has been possible since 17th October. Both matches are on webserver, with 24 boards against Denmark and 20 versus Peru. We've played both countries previously, with our last match against the Danes a combined webserver/postal event, running from 2005-08 and ending in a substantial win for the Vikings. Our last outing against Peru was postal only (with a few void games resulting from missing postcards), running over 1997-2001, and providing one of our rare international wins. Good luck and friendship to everybody taking part!

Once again, the Italians are fielding a strong team with a grading advantage on most boards, so we can expect the going to be hard. 04 Jan 12 | Allan Hislop
Sad news to start the New Year as Ian Hislop reports his father's death just before Christmas. Allan was 86 and had been diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2011. He passed away peacefully in Mearnskirk Hospital on 21st December. Ian reports that Allan's mind was still sharp to the finish, which the family put down to his chess - they remember him in his chair for hours every night playing chess and trying various moves, then out to the post box in time for the next collection. Allan's passion for chess was mentioned at his funeral. With Bernard Partridge, Allan was a founder member of SCCA, became life member no. 10, and was an active organiser for the Association over many years. He worked as a GPO technical officer in Glasgow and was responsible for setting up SCCA telephone chess rules. He ran the Handicap and other tournaments, introduced the Candidates stage to the Championship cycle, played in the Championship final and represented Scotland in numerous friendly international matches. Allan was still playing League chess for the Black Knight team which finished 1= in division 1 during the 2008 season. Allan preferred to avoid the limelight, but he was well respected by all who knew him for his love of chess, organising ability, hard work, friendly manner and devotion to his family. Allan will be much missed within the SCCA, and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.
